This term University of Waterloo Campus Compost hosted a social media contest incorporating sustainability and self-care/healthy habits! Thank you to everyone who participated and submitted a creative piece sharing their tips and informing those on how to be more sustainable when taking time to rest and care for themselves. We hope that from these submissions you’ve learned a new self-care tip especially during this busy exam season!

Edna Bozhori: Sustainable Beauty Products (IG Post)

“Seeing the amount of waste that comes from beauty products is what first drew me to low-waste practices. Personal care products are often synonymous with self-care. Typically the first image that comes to mind is someone applying a sheet mask. Simultaneously, in a society that tells us we need each new product on the market to be beautiful, we start to accumulate a lot of plastic bottles. Over the past few years, I’ve transitioned to refilling my personal care products from places like ZWB instead of purchasing them at the store. It’s definitely a process of trial and error to find what you like. P.S. My favourite shampoo & conditioner is the Citrus one from Carina Organics 😊”

-Edna

Thalia Criollo Guerrero: Sustainable Personal Self-Care Products (IG Post)

“This photo represents a little bit of the small changes I have made in my life during the last year. I’ve always known that I have to take care of the environment, that we have to throw garbage in its place. But, I have never been more conscious than I am now. A couple of months ago, I switched from bottled personal care products to solid products that are friendlier to the environment and my health. Now I take care of myself and the planet. I hope to inspire others and invite you to be part of the change. You are not alone in this journey. Good luck with your finals.”

Rishona Seraphim: Self-Care & Healthy Habits as a Priority (Photo)

“The one thing I always tell the people around me about maintaining healthy habits and sustainable self care is to see it as a priority rather than a reward. It’s easy to treat rest and self care as something that needs to be earned. A reward for working hard or accomplishing a lot. Instead, I challenge them to take a walk, listen to music, or read a book no matter how much they feel like they’ve achieved that day!”

-Rishona

Mick Wang: Ways to Use Old Fruit & Leftover Peels (IG Post)

“Fruit is a great part of a healthy, balanced diet packed with vitamins and minerals. With over 40% of food going to waste each year, here are some ideas on how to give new life to fruit and fruit scraps which include things from vinegars to delicious, zero-waste snacks.”

-Mick

Negar Sabour: Home Garden (IG Post)

“This is the window of my kitchen. I add greenery by regrowing vegetables and herbs like lettuce, green onion, basil and garlic.”

-Negar
